The shape and stability of possible orbits in a realistic 3D barred galaxy model are numerically studied. The model is analytically described, including the axisymmetric component, the bar component, parameters, Hamiltonian, and stability of periodic orbits. All principal families of periodic orbits are described. The influence of the main families on the nonperiodic orbits is estimated using the surface of section technique. The change in stability due to the variation of the mass and the axial ratios of the bar is analyzed. It is concluded that many vertical instability strips of direct plane orbits exclude plane motion and modify conclusions drawn from 2D studies. One of these instability strips can explain the cushion or box shapes of the bulge of some galaxies seen edge-on. Such bulges would contain mostly 4/1 z-oscillating stars, and would be indicators of the existence of a bar. Bar growth is limited by increasing vertical as well as horizontal instability, which favors ergodic motion.
