A deconvolved brightness profile of the galaxy M87 is derived from photographic and CCD photometric data with Point Spread Function (PSF), and a suitable modification of the convolution integral equation is used to test the star-like and extended Gaussian hypotheses concerning the nucleus. The 'no-spike' hypothesis, which gives a larger spread of the residuals, is also tested. The influence of the wings of the PSF is analyzed by deconvolution from a 1-to-4 Gaussian fit of the star profile. It is concluded that overall information about the galaxy can be derived with the present analysis from an incomplete knowledge of the PSF.
