Since June 2001, the SkyServer website has offered the public unlimited access to the database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). SkyServer includes a set of simple, intuitive tools for searching the database, including the Navigation Tool, a point-and-click interface to the sky. SkyServer also includes a set of educational projects that allow students from 4th grade through college to learn science using SDSS data.
Since SkyServer went online, it has received over 10 million hits, at a steadily increasing rate. Hundreds of classes around the world have used SkyServer projects, and many have used SkyServer to conduct original research that compares favorably with professionally published results.
In this talk, I will demonstrate SkyServer's features, discuss its usage and effectiveness, and share future plans and lessons learned. I look forward to meeting with outreach groups from other projects.
