Searches for optical transients from gamma-ray bursts employ location boxes that are several to tens of arc-minutes across. With boxes of this size, the probability of finding a type 1A supernovae in a search down to V magnitude 24 is substantial. For instance, in an error box of 1 arc-minute radius, one expects the probability of finding a supernovae is approximately 0.15%.
