Palomar Observatory has a proud history of fundamental contributions to astronomy, fueled by technological innovations and dedicated or experimental research programs. We will discuss the possible roles Palomar can play at the frontiers of astronomical research in the new era of 8 and 10-meter telescopes, continuing this tradition of discovery. Possible strategies include the use of Palomar as a testbed for new observing technologies and instruments, as a venue for exploring new, possibly risky ideas, in conducting surveys and providing fundamental or supporting data sets for studies to be done with larger telescopes, for follow-up observations related to space missions, etc.
