On the wake of the Hipparcos success several highly accurate space astrometry missions are approved (two from the US) or under study (two from Europe) for launch before 2010. Stellar physics and galactic physics constitute the core science of these missions. I will discuss the common or specific features underlying the design of these missions (global or local astrometry, pointing or scanning instrument) and their foreseen impact on the understanding of the Galaxy, and more generally on galactic astrophysics, on star formation and evolution and on the distance scale beyond the local group.
