At present, the highest angular resolutions that can be reached with connected element interferometers operating at millimeter wavelengths are ≈0.5 arcsec. In the submillimeter regime, routine observations have so far only been possible with single dish telescopes with beam sizes around 10 arcsec, although first interferometric measurements have reached sub-arcsecond resolution and the Submillimeter Array will start operations in the near future. Far higher resolutions, in the sub-milliarcsecond regime, have been reached with millimeter-wavelength Very Long Baseline Interferometry. However, only compact sources emitting non-thermal radiation can be detected with VLBI methods. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) will open the thermal universe for studies with maximum resolutions of order 10 milliarcseconds, which corresponds to about 1 AU at the distance of nearest star-forming regions and to a few parsec, the size of individual molecular clouds, at the distance of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. By studying dust and molecular and atomic line emission from the local universe out to high redshifts, ALMA will have a major impact on all of the topics discussed at this symposium. Its combination of high sensitivity and spatial resolution will make ALMA the millimeter and submillimeter counterpart to the Square Kilometer Array and the Expanded VLA at radio wavelengths and the Next Generation Space Telescope in the optical and infrared regimes.
