The VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) is the first dedicated Space-VLBI mission and resulted from a large international collaboration. We report here on the planning for a second generation mission, tentatively called VSOP-2, which builds on and extends the successful collaborations established for the VSOP mission. As a strawman model, we assume that the VSOP-2 spacecraft will have a 10 m class antenna with cryogenically cooled low-noise receivers and provide a downlink data rate of 1 Gbps. Compared to the VSOP mission, the observing frequency bands may be shifted towards higher frequencies, and the current thought is to observe in the 5 (or 8), 22 and 43 GHz bands, which allows both higher angular resolution and observations of the optically thin emission in many AGN cores. An orbit with a slightly higher apogee height than the VSOP spacecraft is preferred. Using the combination of cryogenically cooled receivers and wider observing bandwidths, many more sources will be detectable by the VSOP-2 mission compared to the VSOP mission. Indeed it is hoped that most of the sources currently observed by ground-VLBI will be able to be observed by VSOP-2 but with much higher angular resolution (~20 microarcseconds at 43 GHz). In this paper various VSOP-2 areas of study will be presented including spacecraft configuration, orbit choice, and imaging capabilities.
