We investigate the star formation and chemical evolution of damped Lyman-α systems (DLAs) based on the disk galaxy formation model by MMW. The empirical Schmidt law of star formation rates is adopted and the closed box model is studied, in which we also consider the simple gravitational stability of a thin isothermal gas disc as first discussed by Toomre. The time for star formation lasts for 1 Gyr at z=3, and instantaneous recycling is assumed. There is only one output parameter in our models, e.g. the stellar yield, which relates to the time of star formation history. It is obtained by normalizing the the metallicity distribution of DLAs with a mean value of 1/13 Zodot. We conclude that the closed box model can work although there still exists a little inconsistency in the distribution of metallicity between the model and observations. In this paper, the random inclinations of galactic discs and the cross sections for observations are taken into account.
