I review the results of a variety of deep extragalactic surveys performed with the Infrared Space Observatory and with SCUBA/JCMT, with nicely complementary capabilities to cover the whole range from infrared through sub-millimeter wavelengths. These surveys incontrovertibly demonstrate for the first time that faint IR sources evolve on a very fast cosmic timescale up to redshift of at least one, a result fitting well with the intense flux from the extragalactic IR background radiation (CIRB) recently detected in the COBE database. Altogether, the integrated output by distant galaxies in the IR may be two to three times larger then their total optical/near-IR starlight emission from 0.1 to 10 μ m. As it is essential to understand the origin of this huge energy reservoir (whether mostly due to stellar or gravitational accretion processes), I will discuss our recent near-IR spectroscopic follow-up efforts on these faint IR sources, and tentatively conclude it is largely due to dust reprocessing of optical-UV light emitted by young stars. I will finally discuss implications of these discoveries and relate them to the more general issue of baryon transformations during galaxy evolution.
