A search for radio emission from the remnants of the four supernovae observed in the external galaxy NGC 6946 since 1917 is reported. The galaxy was mapped at 6 and 20 cm using 14 antennas of the Very Large Array with resolutions of 0.3 and 0.6 arcsec, respectively. No radio emission was detected at the positions of the four supernovae, allowing upper limits to be placed on the flux densities and luminosities of the remnants. It is found that if the distance to NGC 6946 is taken as 7 Mpc, the limits on the monochromatic intensity at 20 cm are comparable to that of the Galactic supernova remnant Cas A, indicating that peak radio luminosity must occur 50-300 years after the outburst. Results are used to set limits to the magnetic field strengths or relativistic electron energies in slowly and rapidly expanding remnants, and it is suggested that the lack of energetic electrons is the more reasonable explanation for the low radio fluxes.
