A set of H alpha and blue photographs of 65 galaxies has been examined for identification and counts of H II regions and for the presence of strong dust features. The galaxies have been classified by the strength of the dust lanes, and the total number of bright H II regions are tabulated. An analysis of the dependence of the H II counts with distance and luminosity of the galaxy has been made. It is concluded that for Sbc and Sc galaxies the detectability of bright H II regions optically decreases approximately as 1/r in the distance range studied and that the number of H II regions is approximately proportional to the 0.75 power of the luminosity of the galaxy. The dust class of the late-type spirals is shown to be equal to the shock strength as calculated by Roberts, Roberts, and Shu (1975), and the number of H II regions in this sample of galaxies is found to be proportional to the 0.3 power of the dust class.
