The clouds seen in the UV photographs of Venus do not correspond to variations in the amount of polarization, in either UV or visible light. This absence of correlation indicates that these clouds do not lie at the altitude in which the polarization is formed, which is around 70 km. The absorber responsible for the dark features seen in UV has to be localized deeper in the atmosphere, at optical depths larger than 6, which are still reached by the light but with too much multiple scattering to contribute significantly to the polarization. The altitude of these clouds is below 60 km and they may be related to the large particles of at least 8 micron diameter detected by Pioneer-Venus at altitudes between 50 and 56 km (C layer) or around 48 km (B layer).
