In Luyten's proper motion catalogues LHS and NLTT the magnitude estimations mpg and mR of red LP stars between mpg = 10 and 16 have been compared with photoelectric B and R. After applying corrections to both estimated series a mean colour-luminosity relation was derived. Of course, the dispersion in the absolute magnitudes is large (±1m.4) but the procedure seems to be suitable for selecting nearby star suspects for further distance determinations.
