We present a new determination of the luminosity function in photographic magnitudes for the brightest stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, down to Mpg = -5.5. This luminosity function does not differ significantly in the lower absolute magnitude range from that of the solar neighbourhood nor from those of young galactic clusters and the irregular galaxy IC 1613, indicating similar laws of star formation. However, significant differences in the proportions of very luminous stars (Mpg = -8) appear to exist between the three galaxies.
