Willy Fowler was a very unique individual: a great scientist who could communicate his feelings of the joy and adventure of research (and other aspects of life) to a diverse audience, from colleagues to the general public. The spirit of his leadership in the Kellogg Radiation Lab at Caltech inspired a generation of astrophysicists and nuclear physicists. Some personal recollections of his influence will be presented. The four talks at this session indicate the scope of his remarkable contributions to our understanding of the universe through nuclear astrophysics. They were recognized by many awards, including the 1983 Nobel Prize in physics.
