Classical gamma-ray burst sources are either in an extended halo of our galaxy or else they are at cosmological distances. In either case neutron stars are the likeliest candidates for explaining their origin. A smaller class of soft gamma repeater sources is also likely to require neutron stars. We discuss the physical characteristics of the neutron star systems required, which are different in each of these three situations. Classical gamma ray bursts at any plausible distance result in a relativistic fireball, whose dynamics and radiation output can be calculated. We discuss recent ideas about fireball evolution and shock dissipation, focusing on the interplay bewteen baryons, leptons and magnetic fields, in particular particle acceleration and its implications for cosmic ray production and the gamma-ray spectrum.
