General Relativity predicts the emission of gravitational waves whenever compact concentrations of energy change shape. This could occur in a variety of astrophysical phenomena like the coalescence of binary systems like a pair of neutron stars or black holes. This warpage of space-time propagates through space at the speed of light, and in principle, can be directly detected on the earth's surface. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory is being constructed with a goal to detect these waves and then to use them as a new tool to explore and study the Universe. The sources of gravitational waves and technique for detection will be presented, as well as the status and prospects for the LIGO project.
