High-quality spectra of low-redshift radio-loud quasars are presented. Methods of deblending the narrow and broad lines from each other are presented and their reliability discussed. There is evidence that the narrow-line Balmer decrement in quasars is somewhat above 3. This may indicate contributions either from collisional effects or from dust mixed into the narrow-line region. Less compelling evidence that broad- and narrow-line decrements may correlate suggests that dust is responsible. Quasars tend to have slightly lower narrow-line decrement values than radio galaxies, although the difference is not very significant and a slight tendency towards lower Hα/[NII] ratios. The spectra are also compared with high-quality spectra taken several years ago. One object, 1028+313, has varied significantly: its continuum flux has decreased and this has resulted in the disappearance of a small bump on the blue wing, the rest of the line remaining constant. This argues against simple disc models for the broad-line emission in this object.
