An independent method is presented to confirm the existence of a local system of stars. The method involves determining the density of stars along the line of sight to a very opaque cloud of interstellar dust whose distance is known, and comparing that with the star density in the solar neighborhood. The number of foreground stars projected on such a cloud was less than would be expected if the stellar distribution were uniform. The simplest interpretation is that star densities drop to about half the local value at distances greater than about 500 parsecs. This method is freer than star-count analysis from the problem of accounting for interstellar absorption. Some theories for the origin of the local system are presented.
