A study is made of the basic properties of gravito-acoustic waves in stellar atmospheres by analysing specific examples of analytical and numerical solutions. In a radially stratified stellar atmosphere, typical wave processes such as propagation, reflection, trapping and tunnelling appear in an intermixed manner. In particular, the mode transformation process from gravity waves near the stellar surface to acoustic waves far above the stellar surface is demonstrated. On the basis of this analysis, the existence of (effective) cavities for internal gravity waves in the low-frequency band beneath various atmospheric heights is proposed. In reality, the presence of magnetic fields in stellar atmospheres interferes with this simple-minded cavity scenario for internal gravity waves. Thus, these model calculations for gravito-acoustic waves are applicable only when stellar magnetic fields are sufficiently weak. We discuss several related problems in the solar and stellar contexts.
