If a cluster of galaxies includes a powerful, compact radio source, then scattering of its radiation by the intracluster-gas electrons would make the cluster a weak, diffuse source of highly polarized (p less than about 2/3) radio emission. The parameters of the diffuse sources are calculated for the Perseus and Virgo clusters. By observing this scattered radiation and utilizing X-ray data one could not only gain information on the intracluster gas but also estimate the distance of the cluster and evaluate the Hubble constant. Similarly, the optical radiation of quasars will be scattered by the rarefied gas surrounding them, so that quasars should be enveloped in faint, diffuse emission regions.
