An attempt is made to reproduce the detailed X-ray spectrum of 4U 1822-37, using a simple input spectrum and a spherical shell scattering region. It is shown that the results define a parameter range that is compatible with an X-ray heated atmosphere above an accretion disk, but a further highly ionized extensive region of Thompson depth less than about one is required to explain the partial eclipse. The observed X-ray spectrum is simulated by radiative transfer through a shell of gas and it is determined that most of the gas must lie within 10 to the 8th L(37) cm from the source. The atmosphere and an envelope may encompass much of the binary system in a more luminous source, and so can explain the observed lack of X-ray eclipses in many bright galactic X-ray sources.
