An area of sky centred on the Kleinmann-Low nebula has been mapped in the J = 3 → 2 and J = 2 → 1 lines of CO. There appears evidence for asymmetry of the "pedestal" emission to the west of the source centre, probably indicative of an irregular mass distribution. This is discussed in the context of two models of the high-velocity gas, namely high-velocity nonisotropic outflow, and rotation within a compact cloud. Although the present observations do not enable us to discriminate between these, the presence of optically thin CO emission in this source is shown to lead to severe structural constraints on any rotational model. The suggestion that such a model may also lead to an over-abundance of high-velocity stars is not verified by the present analyses.
