Ground based optical, and IUE UV simultaneous spectrophotometry in the range 1200 to 7000 A of three dwarf novae (VW Hydri, WX Hydri and EK TrA) at quiescence and maximum is discussed. With one exception, the spectra are poorly fitted by the standard model disk spectrum, so the validity of the assumptions that the disk is both steady state and emitting as black bodies at a range of temperatures was reassessed. The rise spectrum of VW Hydri shows that the UV outburst lags at least one day behind the optical. The flux must first increase in the cooler, outer parts of the disk and only later in the inner disk, thus ruling out the mininova model of dwarf nova outbursts. The P Cygni features are seen in two objects in superoutburst. Mass loss rate from the system is small ( 1%) compared with the mass transfer rate from the secondary star.
