The impact of UV observations of normal galaxies on understanding of stellar populations is reviewed. The UV data show that ellipticals (E) possess a population of hot stars. The nature of this component (old versus young stars) is discussed on the basis of current models and recent findings on globular clusters. It is argued that factors such as age stratification, metallicity mixtures and recurring bursts of star formation are plausible explanations of the UV morphology of E galaxies. The heterogeneous UV phenomenology of spirals is also considered, emphasizing the problem of galactic reddening. The changing properties of spectra of galaxies along the Hubble sequence are discussed, focusing on the consequences for stellar evolution and cosmology.
