Dense Matter, Stars: Neutron
Scientific paper
The homogeneous nucleation of a classical one-component plasma is studied as a model for the crystallization of neutron star crusts. Assuming appropriate characteristics for the deep inner crust, the region that crystallizes first, we examine in particular to what extent the crystallization of this region leads to a final microcrystalline structure. This is obtained performing numerical calculations of the nucleation and crystal growth with time-dependent temperature and appropriate cooling history. It is found that at the typical cooling rates of the star, only one single crystal is expected to form, even inside a volume of the order of the whole crust. Since the rest of the crust probably grows simply by ion deposition onto this ordered surface as the crust cools down, we conclude that neutron star crusts are very good crystals.
