The spectra of SGR 1806-20 measured by the ICE experiment show steep turnover below approximately 14 keV. We find that self-absorbed synchrotron emission from a cooling distribution of mildly relativistic electrons (or pairs) provides excellent fits to the spectral data. We then derive from first principles the synchrotron luminosity distance of the source modulo emission area, which is consistent with the radio and infrared distance estimates for a 10 km neutron star.
