In this talk I will discuss some of the lessons I have learned by experience from running a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site program for the NSF for five years. Areas in which I have experimented at the Northern Arizona University site include the selection process, finding appropriate mentors, group building, and coursework for the participants. I will also address some of the unexpected problems that have cropped up, and how I attempted to solve them. In addition, I will try to give some advice to professors on how to help their students put together an outstanding application, and to prospective mentors who have not worked with undergraduates in the past.
