A method is developed for determining the figures of equilibrium of rapidly rotating, gravitating, homogeneous fluid bodies, on the assumption that effects tending to deflect the configuration from an ellipsoid are small. The gravitational potential of an arbitrarily perturbed ellipsoid is calculated to the accuracy required, and a system of equations is obtained for the coefficients that occur in the equation of the bounding surface.
