The formation of the continuous spectrum of supernovae is investigated, focusing on the influence of electron scattering on the relative spectral energy distribution. The spectrophotometric gradient for a spherical envelope under various assumptions regarding the temperature profile is determined. Radiation equations are solved for constant temperature through the envelope and for temperature increasing inward toward the star, for a homogeneous sphere and an envelope composed of plane parallel layers. It is found that the spectrophotometric temperature may differ sharply from the surface temperature, with the observed progressive drop in the former being caused either by a decrease in the surface temperature or by a change-over from local thermodynamic equilibrium to an isothermal state in the envelope.
