Changes in the solar surface magnetic field alter the structure of the superadiabatic zone (outer 10 to the -7th solar mass) and produce luminosity fluctuations. The processes modeled in this paper include the effect of magnetic pressure and the redistribution of the radiative flux. It is found that increases in the solar magnetic field or sunspot area cause a global decrease in the solar luminosity. The lost energy is stored as gravitational potential energy in the convection zone.
