In connection with studies regarding an occurrence of diffusion in the accreted hydrogen envelopes of white dwarfs, Starrfield et al. (1981) suggested the possible existence of stable steady state configurations for hydrogen shell burning at low accretion rates, in the presence of diffusion of CNO elements. The present investigation has the objective to examine the stability of steady state hydrogen shell burning in the presence of diffusion, with particular emphasis on the domain of low accretion rates. It is found that under steady state burning conditions, the effects of sedimentation of CNO elements become important only for accretion rates smaller than 10 to the -11th solar mass per year. Stable steady state configurations may be realized during the normal course of evolution only when accretion occurs onto a hot white dwarf. For cool white dwarfs, the region of stability is bypassed by shell flashes.
