Astrometry, Methods: Data Analysis

Scientific paper

A new technique of numerical filters to evaluate the brightness, position of photocenter and other properties of celestial objects from their two-dimensional CCD images is presented. The filters are based on a set of two-dimensional orthogonal functions, and an appropriate linear combination of the orthogonal functions enables a filter to achieve the minimum variance estimation. Theoretical properties of our filters (called the ORTHO filters) are compared with those of some other methods or techniques proposed so far for one- or two-dimensional image location problems. The results of numerical simulations are also presented for a verification of the theoretical expectations.
