JHKL photometry of heavily reddened early type stars within M 17 is seen as suggesting the existence of protostellar dust shells. The dust temperatures vary from 1800 K to 3600 K. Various optical depths of the shells indicate different evolutionary stages of the embedded objects. A sample of 10 strange IR sources is revealed within M 17, and large IR excesses are present in the JHKL range. It is shown that these excesses can be roughly approximated by radiation of a black body with temperatures between 1800 K and 3600 K. It is thought that the description of the infrared energy distributions might be improved by the application of more than one black body curve for one object. It is pointed out that the first group of sources contains objects in which a large fraction of the stellar energy at short wavelengths is absorbed by circumstellar dust and reradiated at infrared wavelengths.
