A nearly complete sample of galaxies of the Sa and SBa type is presented. H I observations with the 91-m NRAO and the 100-m MPIfR radiotelescopes are obtained for 76 out of a total of 113 Sa galaxies in the magnitude-limited RSA catalog (Sandage and Tammann, 1981). Eighty-two galaxies form a complete sample consisting of all Sa galaxies having a radial velocity less than 3000 km/sec and a declination north of delta equals -30 deg. For 23 galaxies (out of 82) only upper limits for their H I emission are derived. The corrected line widths of the sample of Sa galaxies have a median value of 505 + or - 36 km/sec. The MH/L sub B ratio is found to change from 0.048 + or - 0.013 inside this radius of 0.108 + or - 0.014 outside and to be constant at greater distances within the observational errors.
