A refinement of the weak friction model for tidal interaction in binary systems with highly eccentric orbits is presented. The case where the moment of inertia of one star greatly exceeds that of the other is described in detail, and a coordinate transformation, from semimajor axis to periastron distance, is introduced to describe the parabolic transition in a completely regular way. The structure of their solutions is discussed in a local analysis around the parabolic limit. A global analysis is carried out, together with a complete classification of the conditions for escape and capture, where escape can take place either immediately or after a phase of decreasing and increasing eccentricity. The rich variety of tidal evolution behavior at high eccentricity is discussed.
