Observation of the solar atmosphere to study phenomena which can develop in the Sun's outer layers, strongly dependent on the solar magnetism, is introduced. Events like solar flares have a definite effect not only on large regions of the solar atmosphere but also on the neighboring interplanetary medium. Thus, the time variation of solar activity, with several time scales including the 11-yr cycle, is very important for the physics of the upper terrestrial atmosphere and magnetosphere.
