Research performed in the U.S. from October 1982 to May 1986 on the middle-atmosphere dynamics is reviewed. The topics discussed include extratropical large- and medium-scale waves and instabilities, gravity waves, tropical motions, and the general circulation. In addition, consideration is given to the studies of atmosphere constituent transport. A number of studies in the latter area have shed light on the specific seasonal behavior of dynamically controlled important constituents in the stratosphere, such as ozone, water vapor, and aerosols.
