The results of 408 MHz MERLIN (Multi-Element Radio Link Interferometer Network) observations of a sample of 54 quasars selected from the Jodrell Bank 966 MHz survey are presented. Maps of the 408 MHz sources were used in conjunction with existing observations at 1.4, 1.6, and 5 GHz to obtain flux density cores, lobes, hotspots and jets. Statistical properties of the quasar sample were investigated. The relationship between structural class and spectral index was compared with other radio samples selected at different frequencies. The properties of flat-spectrum, core-dominated quasars were compared with those of the extended, steep-spectrum, lobe-dominated quasars in the sample, and both were tested for orientation effects caused by relativistic beaming. It was found that in general, core-dominated sources have properties that correlate with the orientation of the source axis to the line of sight, and that the cores of lobe-dominated sources also show this effect. However, in the lobe-dominated sources intrinsic asymmetries on a lobe to lobe basis play a more significant role than orientation.
