The authors identify IRAS 15194-5115 with a previously unknown extreme carbon star which is the third brightest carbon star in the sky at 12 μm (1148 Jy). Results of optical and infrared photometry and spectroscopy are presented. The 3.03 μm absorption feature associated with C2H2 and HCN is seen as well as SiC emission at 11.2 μm. A comparison with recent model calculations of Rowan-Robinson et al. indicates that this star is very similar to IRC +10216 and that it lies at a distance of about 1.7 kpc.
