Balmer-line flux ratios in H II galaxies are used to constrain models of the reddening local to our Galaxy. The distribution of flux ratios suggests a shallow slope for the cosec |b| dependence of E(B-V), rejecting with a 95 per cent confidence level values higher than 0.066. The presence of line-ratios close to the theoretical (unreddened) value suggests that there are at least some reddening-free sight-lines.
