The mechanism for the excitation of toroidal Alfven oscillations during the compression or expansion of the magnetosphere is examined. The transformation of the original magnetoaoustic pulse into an Alfven wave occurs due to the disturbance of the azimuthal motion (convection) of the magnetospheric plasma. A comparison of calculations of the disturbance amplitudes with observations points to the sufficiently high efficiency of the proposed mechanism.
