This paper provides a detailed analysis of the asymptotic behaviour, toward the initial singularity, of the general cosmological solution containing ultrarelativistic matter and a scalar field. In order to analyse the reciprocal influence existing between the ultrarelativistic matter and the scalar field, we develop, asymptotically, a perturbative approach to the well known inhomogeneous mixmaster model in the presence of a massless scalar field. Limiting our attention up to the first-order linear approximation, we show how, in the Kasner regime, the ultrarelativistic matter-energy density retains its `field-free' form.
