Contact binaries represent the most abundant class of objects among close binaries, but they have been observed with modern polarimeters to only a meager extent. The history of these observations is reviewed and data referring to a previously unobserved star are summarized. It is shown that there exist some systematics among the small signals displayed by these systems. The most direct understanding of the results leads to recognition of a distribution of scatterers which is asymmetric with respect to the orbital plane. It is inferred that scattering of photospheric radiation from an asymmetric, systemic corona is the source of the signals.
