High signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) obserations of the 6220-6630 A spectral region toward the QSO 2000-330 and the 5710-6140 A region toward the QSO 2126-158 were obtained in September 1986 at Cerro Telolo Observatory. It was found that weak C IV doublets at z = 3.047, 3.173, and 3.230 correspond to strong Ly-alpha lines identified by Hunstead et al. (1986) and thus represent new metal-line systems. This discovery does not rule out the possibility that the vast majority of Ly-alpha systems are metal-free, but does suggest that higher S/N observations might reveal still more metal-line systems. The existence of an appreciable population of weak metal-line systems toward QSOs would blur the canonical distinction between Ly-alpha and metal-line systems, confuse the statistical studies based on such distinctions, and complicate the identification of weak species like C I possibly associated with strong metal-line systems.
