By a comparison of the energy momentum tensors of the scalar field and
the perfect fluid, an equation of state of the scalar field is obtained.
In connection with cosmological models, the resulting equation of state
depends essentially on the assumption whether the scalar field is
exactly homogeneous or only homogeneous in the mean.
