The spectral characteristics of gravitational waves (GWs) produced by coalescing white dwarfs and neutron stars in the evolution of low-mass binaries and by supernova explosions are examined theoretically, extending and refining the analysis of Lipunov and Postnov (1987). Theoretical spectra and detection probabilities for GWs of different origins are presented graphically, and the possibilities for discriminating between Galactic and extragalactic sources are discussed.
