A search for young compact infrared objects in the direction of 76 interstellar H2O/OH masers of the southern galactic plane resulted in the discovery of 7 new candidates of luminous pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. The near infrared photometry, the IRAS data and available radio measurements are used to derive several physical properties of these sources. The authors briefly discuss the location in the IRAS colour-colour diagrams of PMS stars associated with interstellar masers. Well defined areas in IRAS colour diagrams are delineated for the selection of IRAS point sources in future near-infrared and maser searches of protostars.
