Observations of the outer disks of spiral galaxies reveal a multitude of different properties, from stellar surface brightness breaks to extended UV disks. Because these extreme regions are believed to be the sites of current galaxy assembly, they present us with ideal laboratories in which to study the process of disk formation. We discuss two aspects of galaxy formation, important for the observed properties of outer disks: stellar radial migration and misaligned gas infall. We show that both of these processes have important consequences for other disk structural properties, in particular the thick disk.
